FREE Home Sustainability Assessments

FREE Home Sustainability Assessments
Residents of Armidale, Guyra, Walcha, Uralla and other New England towns can now access free home sustainability assessments to save energy and water around the house and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

The free assessments (valued at over $250) are funded by the Australian Government’s Green Loans Program.

These recommendations range from simple actions like switching to energy
efficient lights and replacing shower heads, to larger scale changes such as
Insullation, window modifications including coverings, rainwater tanks, solar panels, gas and solar hot water systems, grey water treatment systems, energy efficient washing machines and fridges, and more efficient heating or cooling systems.

A qualified assessor will visit your home and advise you on the best actions to reduce your energy and water bills, increase the comfort of your home, and reduce damaging carbon pollution. Your assessment will involve the physical inspection of major energy and water systems relating to thermal comfort, water heating, lighting, refrigeration, cooking, entertainment, water efficiency and outdoor consumption and waste management.

These assessors could provide you with some simple ways to keep your house comfortable in the New England Specific climate, while reducing your energy consumption.

The Green Loans Program involves three easy steps:

Step 1: Book your free home sustainability assessment with a local assessor
Step 2: Receive your tailored home sustainability report.
Step 3: Choose which of the recommended actions you will take to improve your home.

Armidale Council’s Domestic Energy Committee supports the home sustainability assessments, and is pleased to have this local expertise available to residents. The Committee is working to improve the quality of life in Armidale. It is developing an education program to support householders to learn more about their energy use and its impacts, and how to keep homes comfortable and save money at the same time. There are so many government programs set up to encourage the uptake of ‘Green’ energy options, and lots products and services available. However care must be taken to find solutions that are suited to Armidale’s unique climate. It’s a matter of getting the information out there, and as people find out more about the real economic and environmental benefits of making their homes ‘Green’, undoubtedly they will make big and small changes to how energy is supplied and used in their homes” said Carol Davies, Armidale Council’s Domestic Energy Education Officer.
